I've always found one of the hardest things is not to visualize my character's appearance myself, but to convey what (s)he looks like to the other people I'm RP'ing with. Just describing their basic hair/eyes/clothes still doesn't really give the same kind of sense of who you're looking at as a photo does. And I don't have the money to have some artist draw up a custom portrait of every character I play. To that end, I selected photos of what I feel is closest to what my character would look like.
