Glyphs are to drow much like heraldry is to the surface world. The most well-known use of them is on house symbols. Typically in a drow city the house symbols are worn openly in the city only by the most powerful ranking house, however all drow carry their house symbols on them. In a house's compound these symbols are worn openly.
House symbols are carried by all members of a house. While noble family members have magical house symbols that perform a variety of spell effects as customized by the house wizard, even the lowliest house slave will have a plain black metal disk with their house symbol on it. When not in their house compound, these symbols are carried in a neckpurse on the traditional drow piwafwi cloaks.
